The Muri Competition

Excellence. This is what distinguishes «The Muri Competition». Young, up-and-coming oboists and bassoonists from all over the world compete here. And at a world-class level. They compete for scholarships and prestigious awards. Good is not good enough. Excellence is what counts. And it's not them or the audience who decide, but experts.

The world will meet in Muri from April 9 to 19, 2026. «The Muri Competition» has long since become a fixture on the scene. An interested specialist audience is not only inspired here. They make and cultivate relationships for life. With professional musicians, jurors, experts and sponsors. Because «music connects».

Artistic direction - why we get involved

The Artistic Director of The Muri Competition is responsible for the musical quality of the entire competition. It determines the repertoire, invites the jury and organizes the orchestra for the final. It also organizes the chamber music ensembles for the semi-finals and the accompanists. Before and during the competition, she is the central point of contact for all musical questions.

  • Renato Bizzotto

    Artistic Director

In 2013, we had the vision of putting Muri - our village, our monastery - on the world map of music. Today, Muri has become a brand that every oboist and bassoonist knows at a professional level - worldwide.
That is what drives me: to turn our cultural hotspot into a center for music that opens up new perspectives for musicians. The competition should help them to lay a decisive building block for their career and accompany them on their way.

  • Martin Frutiger

    Chair Jury Oboe

Professor of Oboe, Zurich University of the Arts

The Muri Competition is a great success story and is now firmly established in the world of double reeds. Today, our prizewinners hold important international positions in orchestras and music academies and have great careers as soloists. Muri is about more than discovering talent and promoting careers: the focus is on encounters between oboists and bassoonists, with world-famous jurors, producers, the public and host families. It has been a great pleasure for me to be part of the organizing team of this competition from the very beginning

  • Matthias Rácz

    Chair Bassoon Jury

Professor of Bassoon, Zurich University of the Arts

I have been involved in The Muri Competition from the very beginning and am proud to bring the best international oboists and bassoonists to Switzerland. Promoting the young generation of musicians is a great need of mine.

Organization - professional, creative, well-rehearsed.

Behind The Muri Competition is a small team with passion and clear structures. Their common goal is to make excellence possible. What unites us is the music and the will to create something special together.

Renato Bizzotto is responsible for overall management and Peter Müller for project coordination.

I've been part of the OC since 2013. The personal encounters with the musicians, the jury, the répétiteurs and the helpers never fail to inspire me. That's what makes The Muri Competition unique for me.

The Muri Competition takes place on the premises of Muri Abbey. For me, this is a place that shows: Consistency and renewal belong together. And listening is the basis for everything. That's how I work: I understand, speak clearly and create something new together.
